Throughout Dementia Action Week, Swindon Borough Council will be bringing the town together to better support over 2,000 people and their carers who are living with dementia.

Next week (21 – 27 May 2018), the Council will be working in partnership with many other organisations to offer activities to people with dementia, while also promoting ways that people can reduce their risk of dementia.

The following dementia-friendly activities will be taking place throughout Dementia Action Week:

  • Monday, 21 May (2.45pm – 3.45pm): Dementia Friendly Swim Session, Dorcan Recreation Complex
  • Wednesday, 23 May (10am) – Dementia Friendly Walk, McArthur Glen Outlet Centre
  • Thursday, 24 May (11am) – Memory Cinema at The Swindon Arts Centre
  • Friday, 25 May (10am – 12pm) – Dementia friendly gardening club – TWIGS, Manor Garden Centre

People can also get involved by becoming a Dementia Friend by attending an information session run by the Alzheimer’s Society. The sessions provide an insight into what it’s like to live with dementia and how that understanding can be turned into action to support people in the community living with the condition. More information can be found on the Alzheimer’s Society website.

Cllr Brian Ford, Cabinet Member for Adults, said: “Unfortunately, dementia is a condition which affects a large amount of people, so it’s vital that as a town, we are as dementia friendly as possible, not just through Dementia Action Week but all year round.

“The dementia-friendly activities are a great way to find out more about dementia and how you can support people who are living with the condition so are well worth a visit.”
