Letter from Highways England, 28th July 2020
Highways England operates, maintains and improves England’s motorways and major
A roads. I am writing to let you know we will begin improvement works on the M4 at J15
on 10 August 2020.
On occasion we will need to divert traffic through your Parish and we wanted to make
you aware of this in advance. A diversion will be in place on the B4192 and The
Ridgeway, to the A346 to Marlborough, then joining the A4 and the A388 to Hungerford,
before finally re-joining the M4. These diversions will be infrequent and will be in place
overnight between the hours of 8pm and 6am the following morning.
We will only use diversions when absolutely necessary. We will keep you informed via
advance roadside warning signs. Alternatively, you can follow us on Twitter at
@HighwaysSWEST to receive up to date information, or visit www.trafficengland.com
Thank you for your patience whilst these essential works are carried out.
The works
We will be working closely with funding partners Swindon Borough Council, Swindon
and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership and developers Persimmon and Redrow, to
deliver this 12-month project which will improve journey times for motorists by tackling
congestion at peak times on both the busy M4 junction and on the A419.
Works will include:
- Widening of the A419 southbound approach to M4 J15 Commonhead
roundabout from 2 to 3 lanes, with a dedicated left lane for London-bound traffic - Widening of the M5 J15 northbound exit to the A419
- Widening of the A346 to the south of M4 J15
- Widening of the M4 J15 eastbound exit-slip
- M4 J15 westbound exit-slip road, lengthening of the 3-lane section
- Widening the M4 J15 southern circulatory carriageway from 2 to 4 lanes
- Upgrading existing footpaths and installing a new signalised pedestrian crossing
over the M4 Junction 15 westbound entry-slip road
During the scheme, embankments will be cleared and remodelled. Day House Lane and
Meadow Way will be permanently closed to vehicles, but will remain open for nonmotorised users.
Please accept our apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
Traffic Management
The majority of this work will be carried out during the day at the roadside behind barriers.
However, occasional overnight closures will be necessary, during which traffic will be
diverted through your Parish. We will make every effort to ensure the impact on the local
community and travelling public is kept to a minimum.
