Cllr David Renard and Cllr Baroness Scott of Bybrook: Build a safe, traffic-free cycle path between Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon

The petition reads:

We are calling on Swindon Borough Council, Wiltshire Council and the Local Economic Partnership to prioritise the building of a safe, traffic-free cycle path between Swindon and Wootton Bassett.

Everyday hundreds of people commute between Wootton Bassett and Swindon. The distance is relatively short (2 miles end to end) and could easily be cycled within 15 minutes. Many residents of both towns express their desire to travel by bike for both commuting and leisure purposes. However this is currently not feasible unless you are confident to navigate the main arterial road and motorway Junction 16. There is currently no traffic-free means of getting between both towns.

A safe, traffic-free, direct cycle path could save 111,000 motor vehicle trips across Junction 16 each year. As well as reducing congestion and air pollution levels it would encourage people of all ages and abilities to travel actively to work and for leisure purposes, improving the health of local residents.

Following community consultation, a preferred route has been chosen. This petition aims to gather together local support for the scheme to help persuade decision makers that we need the cycle route now!
