Experience the chance to sing, sway and step into the past as STEAM Museum transforms into a celebration of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s this September.

STEAM’s Golden Age Festival, a brand-new flagship event, takes place on Saturday, 13 September and Sunday, 14 September from 10am to 5pm.

Set against the museum’s historic backdrop, this weekend-long festival promises an immersive journey through the glamour, music, and innovation of mid-20th century Britain.

Festival highlights will include:

  • Live music from the era’s most iconic sounds
  • Dance classes and demonstrations including both swing and jive
  • Sing-along sessions with timeless classics
  • Vintage and artisan stalls featuring retro fashion, crafts, and collectables
  • Outdoor displays of vintage and steam-powered vehicles
  • Exhibitions of period costume and fashion
  • Family-friendly activities, including a making a marvellous marble run
  • Step inside an air raid shelter and discover life on the Home Front

Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to be transported back to a different era and experience the sights and sounds of mid-20th century Britain.

“A celebration for all ages, the festival is also a great opportunity for local businesses to showcase their artisan products. And even if you don’t attend, you may hear the sound of the Swindon Works Hooter echoing across the town throughout the weekend.”

Frances Yeo, Swindon Museums Manager, added: “This exciting new event has something for everyone, from storytelling and trying vintage games to browsing stalls selling artisan goods.

“We’re inviting families, vintage enthusiasts, history lovers and curious minds to step back in time and enjoy an unforgettable weekend celebrating the Golden Age of travel, fashion and entertainment.”

To help make the event a success, the STEAM team are also looking for stallholders to showcase vintage-style and artisan products to like-minded people – be it retro fashion, nostalgic transport or anything in-between.
