To help Swindon recycle as much as possible we will be rolling out a number of service changes from August which are explained below. We have also sent everyone an essential guide to waste and recycling in the post but if you have misplaced it, more are available to pick up in your local Swindon Borough Council run library.

Recycling will become compulsory
Many of you are already great recyclers but from 1 August it will be compulsory to recycle the following items to help protect our environment:
- Paper and cardboard
- Tins, cans, foil and aerosols
- Glass bottles and jars
- Textiles
- Plastics
Our Waste Wardens will be on hand to offer support and guidance to those not currently recycling and we may take enforcement action as a last resort against those who refuse to recycle.

Making recycling easier
We collect recycling using boxes so that we can hand sort materials at the kerbside. Every household in Swindon is encouraged to have at least two recycling boxes. Put paper and card in one box, glass, metal (tins, cans, foil) and aerosols in another.

Food Waste Trials
In our waste strategy consultation last year over 70% of residents said they would welcome a food waste collection in Swindon, so from September 2019 selected areas of the borough will be trialling the separate weekly collection of food waste for recycling. Trial routes will be revealed later this week.
Charging for recycling boxes
Every household in Swindon is encouraged to have at least two recycling boxes, but more are available if needed.
Following the lead of many other Councils, a £7 charge for replacement recycling boxes will be introduced on the 1 August 2019. You can order new or replacement boxes for free until 31 July 2019.
