Temporary Road Closures At Regent Circus For Resurfacing Work

Overnight road closures are to be introduced at Regent Circus next month as vital improvement works near completion.

From 8pm to 6am on Monday 6 August, Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 August, the road by the Central Library and MECA will be closed to allow for resurfacing works to take place.

It’s all part of the plan to rejuvenate Regent Circus and improve bus journeys through the town centre.

Cllr Fionuala Foley, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and the Environment, said: “We are asking people to bear with us while we make these very important upgrades to Regent Circus. We are closing the road overnight, rather than during the day, to avoid any unnecessary inconvenience for residents and we hope to have the full works completed by the end of the summer. The new layout will make the environment much safer for pedestrians and public transport will be able to move more freely.”

The scheme involves creating a continuous bus lane from the eastern end of Commercial Road through to Princes Street and forms part of the Quality Bus Corridor between Wichelstowe and the town centre via Old Town and Mannington.

The improvements to Regent Circus include widening and repaving of the existing footpaths on both sides of the road, new bus shelters, new and enhanced street lighting and the installation of soft landscaping in the shape of planters.

The works on the library side are almost complete and the contractor has started on the MECA side, where a new kerb line will be constructed and the gullies relocated.

There will be no vehicular access to Princes Street from Commercial Road or Victoria Road during the overnight closures and diversions will be clearly signposted.
